Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (August 26) had a telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden, and the two leaders discussed several pressing global issues.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister stated, “Spoke to @POTUS @JoeBiden on the phone today. We had a detailed exchange of views on various regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine. I reiterated India’s full support for early return of peace and stability.”
He added, “We also discussed the situation in Bangladesh and stressed the need for early restoration of normalcy, and ensuring the safety and security of minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh.”
A government statement said that PM Modi expressed his appreciation for President Biden’s strong commitment to the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, a relationship rooted in shared democratic values, the rule of law, and close ties between the people of both nations.
“The leaders reviewed the significant progress in bilateral relations and highlighted that the India-US partnership is aimed at benefiting the people of both countries as well as the entire humanity,” the statement added.
During their discussion on the ongoing Ukraine conflict, PM Modi briefed President Biden on his recent visit to Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The conversation also touched upon concerns about the situation in Bangladesh, with both leaders agreeing on the importance of restoring law and order and ensuring the safety of minority communities, particularly Hindus, in the country.
Last week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ukraine and pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to engage in talks with Russia to bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. During his first visit to Ukraine, Modi assured that India was ready to act as a ‘friend’ to help end the war.
“We were not neutral from day one, we have taken a side, and we stand firmly for peace,” PM Modi said.
“The road to resolution can only be found through dialogue and diplomacy. And we should move in that direction without wasting any time. Both sides should sit together to find a way out of this crisis,” he added.
