Gujarat Titans (GT) crashed out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 after the match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was abandoned without toss on Monday (May 13) evening. The points were shared between the two teams, meaning, KKR, who are currently top of the table, confirmed their place in the top two with 19 points to their name while having another game in their hand. The last two times KKR finished in the top two, they went on to win the IPL trophy (2012, 2014).
Despite the cutoff time being 10:56 pm IST, the match could not go ahead as rain continued to batter the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. GT were supposed to take the field in their ‘Lavender-coloured’ second kit to keep their playoff hopes alive but the weather gods had other plans.
“In a highly anticipated clash, the match between Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders was unfortunately abandoned due to persistent rain, leaving both teams to share the points,” IPL said in a statement.
GT joined Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) as the third team to be knocked out of the tournament. GT have 11 points in their bag and can only reach 13 points if they win their last match of the 2024 season.
After the washout, the top two remain unchanged. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) climbed to the third spot after beating Rajasthan Royals (RR) comfortably on Sunday. Having started the tournament in a dominant fashion, SunRisers Hyderabad are yet to make it through the group stage as they occupy the fourth spot with 14 points as well.
Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) occupy the no. 5, 6 and 7 spots respectively, with 12 points each.
