Donald Trump on Saturday (Oct 5) made a defiant return to Butler, Pennsylvania, where an assassination attempt nearly claimed his life in July. Speaking to a massive crowd from behind bulletproof glass, Trump questioned whether his political opponents were behind the attack, declaring that he would “never quit.”
Billionaire Elon Musk made an appearance alongside Trump, emphasising the importance of battleground states like Pennsylvania. Musk urged the crowd to register to vote, stressing the importance of Trump’s victory to “preserve democracy in America.”
A cold-blooded assassin
Speaking to the crowds, Trump branded his almost assassin a “vicious monster” to chants of “fight, fight, fight” from the crowd.
“Exactly 12 weeks ago this evening, on this very ground, a cold-blooded assassin aimed to silence me,” Trump told the rally. Referring to the gunman as a “vicious monster” he vowed he would “never quit… never bend… never break”.
Trump took aim at his political rivals, calling them the “enemy within” and claimed that were behind his indictment and “maybe even tried to kill me.”
“I wasn’t supposed to make it,” he remarked darkly.
Trump’s return to the rally stage comes exactly one month before the November 5 presidential election, a race President Joe Biden recently hinted could be fraught with unrest.
Tighter security
Security at the event was significantly tighter than during Trump’s July rally, with sniper squads positioned on nearby buildings and surveillance drones hovering overhead. Heather Hughes, a supporter from New Castle, Pennsylvania, expressed her concern: “Do I think he’s safe? No, I think there’s going to be another attempt. But I think he’ll make it through.”
Images of Trump, bloodied but defiant, pumping his fist and shouting “fight, fight, fight” after the July attack have since become iconic among his followers. Many attendees at the rally wore shirts bearing these images, and some even donned ear coverings that mirrored the bandages Trump wore after the shooting.
